This is Rosa. I met her on today's hike. We quickly bonded over loving Korean food, speaking Spanish, and enjoying the lush nature surrounding us. She shared with me some tips for the trail and her love for night hikes under the moon and stars. When I asked her if she ever got scared, she said “Sometimes. And the fear would make me trip. But I learned that if the boogeyman is going to meet me in two hours, there’s no point worrying about it now. I’ll see him when I see him. For now I just need to look at what’s in front of me.”

"A lot of our patients come in with their families from far or rural areas. One of the nice things about this hospital is that patients have private rooms so their families can be with them while they’re here. But when COVID hit, visitors were restricted. So then you have patients that are here for three to five days after a transplant and they have no family. They're trying to learn all these new medications and their support systems are having to do this all virtually to discharge them." -Chris

"I realized that there's more to life than just work. Growing up in Singapore, the education system really trains you to be like an unfeeling robot that just works and is all work. But I realized that there's so much more - like art, music, being healthy, friends - that's important." - Preston

- Matt "One thing that kept me going was having some sort of regular rhythm or structure with God to help me touch base every week, so for me that was worship practice. The worship leader was really thoughtful about always hearing from everybody and praying together. Before we did any practice it was just time for us to reflect - half in community and half alone time. And that was super good. That small bit of time was really helpful and ultimately led me to consider doing worship junior year and senior year." - Sherman

“The first time I did a proof-based class, I thought 'I just have to do it.' I went to office hours twice a week. I was constantly doing it and then I thought 'oh wow I’m getting the hang of this.' And I kept telling myself as long as I’m not failing, it’s fine, just keep doing it." -Shyamoli & Tas

I met Alev and her husband (not pictured) while waiting on the sidewalk outside the restaurant; we watched naked men casually walk by and I heard about their dreams of a small flat and retirement in this beautiful city that reminded them of home in Istanbul. We ended up seated next to each other at the bar and plowed through a couple epic bowls of cioppino before eventually parting ways.

"I never could've known as an undergrad what different paths life was going to show me. In hindsight you clearly see them. So I think trust is really important, and trusting in signs. I'm a religious person so, for me, I pray about it and I feel like God gives me signs that are pretty clear…. Even when it's pretty scary, like when I was quitting my job as a news producer, which I was doing really well at and I liked it, I just, it felt like there was something else, that there was something different that I was supposed to do." -Dr. Becerra Vidergar

"At the center of every pearl is pain. The oyster that doesn't recognize that there's a sharp grit in there is just going to bleed—or whatever oysters do—get infected, suffer, and die. Not recognizing pain is actually a dangerous neurological condition. Whether it's emotional or physical pain. Forming a pearl starts with recognizing there's pain there and making something beautiful out of that." -Dr. Hu

"The Anesthesia Diversity Council was started a number of years ago by a former student and then-resident named Felipe Perez, and has been one of the things that has given me complete joy this past year. I think in many ways, the pandemic has increased awareness of systemic racism, prejudice, and injustice in our healthcare systems, and I hope that actual change will follow this awareness. Felipe is now on faculty and has recently been made an Assistant Dean in diversity for the school of medicine. As an academic, a professor, a teacher: seeing someone progress from being a med student, to shining in residency, to becoming a faculty member is one of the most rewarding things and really a part of why I love my job."
-Dr. Shafer Ashi
"So much of college has been doing things out of obligation. You can like pursue a class that you want to take, but you’re obligated to show up to class and do all the work. You can partake in student activities, but once you take a leadership role you’re obligated to do this or that. I almost feel like I don’t remember what it’s like to do something out of pure enjoyment. Like do something regularly. There are always times to do a one off trip to San Francisco or go on a date or something. But like to do something regularly because I like doing this? That’s something I’m looking forward to.” -Robbie

"I was very into photography, freshman year. I'm actually in a photography class right now! It meets Mondays, 7-9 and we just learn the basics of digital photography. I skipped this last assignment. "I think the best way to describe my decision to follow the arts is that it's been a decision to not follow the arts. And it's been how life doesn’t let me make that decision. I've always sang and I've always said that was just a hobby. I was going to have a real job, I was going to be a professor or write shit, because in my mind that was more secure than singing or performing. And life has just been me trying to say no, and finding that that's the only thing I want to do." -Sam
"I wasn't going to pursue anything because freshman year, still trying to figure out things… Remember when Tim said, if nothing seems to be contradicting your beliefs, why don't you give it a try?
